NAIDOC WEEK COMES TO ASC
This week ASC team members in SA and WA had the privilege of being welcomed to Kaurna and Whadjuk Country, and learning about their cultures through performance, as part of NAIDOC Week 2024.
At our Osborne shipyard (SA) the welcome was delivered by Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna man Petiola Wilson, with support from Michael on didgeridoo and Corey singing. At Henderson (WA) the welcome was delivered by Wilman, Balardong, Binjareb, Whadjuk Noongar man Olman Walley, with the Boorloo Dance Group then taking the floor.
The performances reflected this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, and captured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures’ enduring strength and vitality.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Petiola, Olman and their accompanying performers,” says Bridget, who leads ASC’s Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group.
“It’s humbling for ASC team members to be welcomed by Kaurna and Whadjuk peoples to their lands, and be given the opportunity to broaden our understanding of their connection to thousands of years of continuous culture.”

CELEBRATING THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS LIVING CULTURES ON EARTH
ASC joins the nation in recognising and celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples during NAIDOC Week (7-14 July).
This week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of humanity’s oldest, continuous living cultures through activities and events held across the country.
This year’s theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’. The fire in the theme’s artwork (pictured) represents Indigenous cultures’ enduring strength and vitality, passed down through generations.
It’s a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
‘Blak, Loud and Proud’ encapsulates an unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity.
It calls for an unwavering commitment to justice and equality, and invites all Australians to listen, learn and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where Indigenous peoples’ wisdom and contributions are fully valued and respected.

15 comments and can only see one. What a joke.
Absolute insanity! Please stop the pandering to minority groups in an effort to cover contractual obligations for inclusion. Just ticking the boxes! In reality that is the only purpose of this post. Maybe just concentrate on meeting production targets and deliver what the Australian tax payer is funding on time and to specification. 🤷♂️

BRIGHTON STUDENTS GET A GLIMPSE OF LIFE AS AN ASC NAVAL ARCHITECT
ASC senior naval architect Chris appeared yesterday as a guest presenter at Brighton Secondary School’s (SA) ‘Thrive Week’ careers expo for Year 11 and 12 students.
An alumnus of the Australian Maritime College (AMC) at the University of Tasmania, Chris was invited to share his personal career story as part of AMC’s broader careers presentation.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to share what I love about naval architecture with this emerging generation,” says Chris, “and particularly what I find rewarding about working in the field at ASC.”
Having also worked his way through ASC’s Undergraduate and Graduate Engineer programs, Chris’s experience really resonated with students considering working with submarines.
“Interest in the opportunities presented by Australia’s transition to a conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarine fleet is definitely increasing out there – it’s great to see.”
