ASC’s Executive Team is responsible for: providing strategic focus across the organisation; leading the company’s preparation for, and delivery of, the sustainment and joint build of nuclear-powered submarines in Australia; continuing to deliver exemplary sustainment and capability support for Australia’s Collins Class submarine fleet; attracting, retaining and growing an expert workforce; enhancing the company’s cost and transformational culture; and building Australia’s sovereign capability.
Stuart Whiley
Stuart Whiley
Stuart was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASC in February 2018, after holding the position of Interim CEO from July 2014.
His career with ASC spans more than 30 years, during which time he has held various submarine program, project, schedule and systems engineering roles. In 2005 he was appointed General Manager, Collins Class Submarines and became responsible for the delivery of Collins Class submarine support services in South Australia and Western Australia.
Prior to immigrating to Australia from the UK in 1988, Stuart held a number of engineering roles at BAE, Admiralty Research Establishment and Dowty working in a naval/weapons environment.
Paul Gay
Paul Gay
Paul oversees all aspects of ASC's submarine sustainment work, including for the Collins Class Submarine Program, the Collins Life of Type Extension project, and nuclear-powered submarine sustainment. He is also responsible for ASC's submariner training activities.
Paul has over 20 years’ experience in naval platform acquisition and sustainment, commencing his career during the ANZAC Frigate Program with Tenix Defence (later BAE Systems) in 2001 and advancing to become the Platform Systems Engineering Manager for Australia’s capital ships, the Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs). During his tenure, Paul was involved in all aspects of construction: structural, hot-outfit, equipment load-outs, consolidation, cold-outfit and set-to-works. He also oversaw the systems engineering process for the LHD platform, working closely with Navantia.
Paul joined ASC in 2010 as General Manager – Air Warfare Destroyer Project and moved to the submarine business in 2014. Working with Enterprise partners, he led ASC’s implementation of the Coles Review recommendations, including successfully completing the first two-year Full-Cycle Docking, a cornerstone achievement for the company.
Christian Hamilton
Christian Hamilton
Christian is responsible for leading ASC's progression towards the establishment of an incorporated Joint Venture with BAE Systems for the build of Australia's SSN-AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines.
Prior to this role he was Chief Strategy Officer, in which capacity he led the development and execution of company strategy, including addressing the full achievement of the Sovereign Shipbuilding Talent Pool.
Christian has also held positions in strategy, human resources and organisational development with a focus on developing ASC’s strategic framework and enhancing business performance through organisational design, alignment and accountability.
Prior to joining ASC in 2011, Christian spent 14 years in the Australian Army where he held various command and leadership postings including operational tours of East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ashley Menadue
Ashley Menadue
Ashley is responsible for the company's overall financial strategy and direction, inclusive of accounting, audit, tax, treasury, corporate finance and shareholder relations.
He also leads ASC's major contract negotiations and commercial activities, as well as the company's Legal and Risk & Assurance functions.
Prior to his role at ASC, Ashley was the Financial Controller for ASC Shipbuilding (then part of the ASC Group), which saw him work closely with ASC Shipbuilding management to oversee the Air Warfare Destroyer program's financial performance.
Ashley has held a number of senior-level positions over a career spanning more than 30 years. This includes 16 years working in senior executive and corporate finance roles with BAE Systems Australia, and auditing experience with KPMG.
Joanne Horne
Joanne Horne
Joanne is responsible for ASC’s People and Culture functions and strategy across all business areas, and works closely with ASC's Chief Nuclear & Capability Officer to develop workforce capability. She is the senior ASC executive in Western Australia.
Joanne has a wealth of experience in heavy industrial environments and working across geographically diverse locations. She has more than 13 years’ experience in people and culture strategy and operational human resources execution, including five years as General Manager, with Caterpillar dealer, WesTrac.
Prior to joining ASC in 2018, Joanne provided consulting services to a range of businesses including mining company South32.
Alex Walsh
Alex Walsh
Alex Walsh is a degree-qualified nuclear engineer who brings close to 40 years’ experience in the nuclear submarine and power sectors to his role: building ASC's nuclear-readiness and ensuring all ASC program teams possess the necessary capabilities.
Alex joined ASC in January 2022 as Executive Manager Engineering from Sellafield Limited, the UK government entity that manages its Sellafield nuclear site. He commenced with Sellafield as Executive Project Manager leading a complex nuclear project, before moving on to other leadership roles ahead of his most recent role, as Head of Planning Implementation.
With senior expertise in engineering, project management and managing nuclear commissioning, safety and licencing, Alex has worked in the UK, France and Australia. At BAE Systems his roles included Head of Nuclear Construction (leading the team constructing the Astute reactors) and Head of Nuclear Safety Engineering (leading nuclear authorisation and the safety case for Astute fuelling, commissioning and power range testing).
Alex previously worked at ASC in 2013 and 2014, as General Manager Engineering.
Rebecca Livesey
Rebecca Livesey
Rebecca joined ASC in 2019 and is responsible for leading the execution of the company's strategic and transformation agendas. For over 20 years she has worked in strategy and leadership roles across Australia and the United Kingdom, leading and facilitating transformation in organisations such as WesTrac, MEC Mining, Aurizon, CS Energy, Westpac, E.ON and RACQ. She specialises in linking leadership, strategy and culture to drive transformation in organisations.
With an MA in Mathematics from Oxford University, Rebecca brings to the table extensive expertise in strategy development, organisational transformation, decision-making frameworks, leadership patterns, behaviour profiling, culture-change models and facilitation. She has run her own business as well as held executive roles within organisations, so recognises the need to be agile and lean in approach.
Rebecca is recognised as a thought leader in organisational leadership and culture and is well regarded as a professional speaker with a passion for people and diversity.
ALASDAIR STIRLING
ALASDAIR STIRLING
Alasdair supports the interface between ASC and its operational partners in the UK.
He joined ASC in November 2022 and led ASC’s advisory function on nuclear-powered submarine capability development in the lead-up to the Australian Government's March 2024 selection of ASC to sustain and jointly build nuclear-powered submarines in Australia.
His career includes senior roles with the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors in the United Kingdom, and extensive experience working on nuclear-powered submarines, including as engineering and program authority for the Astute Class submarines (design, build and support); in-service sustainment of the Swiftsure, Trafalgar and Vanguard Classes; and design and build of the Dreadnought Class. These roles involved working closely with United States government authorities.
Alasdair also has industrial experience as Managing Director of Babcock Submarine Support Engineering, and Director of Engineering for the Babcock nuclear sector - which includes civil and naval nuclear engineering.
Alasdair is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Project Professional.
Ivan Witt
Ivan Witt
Ivan was appointed General Counsel and Company Secretary of ASC in November 2019. As Company Secretary, he is responsible for the efficient administration of the company and its subsidiaries, particularly in relation to corporate governance, regulatory compliance and for ensuring that decisions of the Board of Directors are implemented.
In his General Counsel role, he is responsible for the provision of strategic legal advice to management and the leadership of the commercial legal team including export controls and workers' compensation.
Prior to joining ASC, Ivan's career has spanned the shipping, transport, logistics, hospitality and resources industries. Additionally, he is a serving Captain in the Royal Australian Naval Reserves.
