It is fantastic to announce that ASC Shipbuilding’s central role in the construction of the AWDs has been recognised with a state award by the Australian Institute of Project Managers (AIPM).
ASC Shipbuilding is the shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyers and has helped deliver Australia’s most potent warships on time and on budget since reform of the program in 2014.
It is fantastic to announce that ASC Shipbuilding’s central role in the construction of the AWDs has been recognised with a state award from the Australian Institute of Project Managers (AIPM).
The AIPM awarded its defence/aerospace prize to ASC Shipbuilding for the installation of the six main propeller shafts in the three destroyers.
Installing the 15m-long, 20 tonne main shafts was a major step in building the highly complex, 147m-long warships.
The AIPM found that the ASC Shipbuilding team delivered the milestones safely, consistent with project management best practice and achieved consistent efficiency improvements throughout the three-build project.
Time savings of more than 50 per cent were achieved on Ship 3, compared to Ship 1 – an efficiency improvement reflected cross ASC Shipbuilding’s role as the warship platform builder.
The judges praised the exemplary work of the integrated project management team and the lessons learnt in transitioning from Ship 1 to 3, which resulted in a successful outcome for the program.
ASC Shipbuilding Acting Chief Executive Jim Cuthill said the award showed the capability of the company in designing and implementing novel and successful shipbuilding operations throughout a three-build project.
“This award is a testament to the fantastic, integrated project management, engineering and production capability in our team here at ASC Shipbuilding,” said Jim.
“ASC Shipbuilding’s personnel are second-to-none and this award shows that we have much to offer to the nation today and in the years to come.”
The submission from ASC Shipbuilding acknowledged the collaboration between ASC Shipbuilding’s Integrated Project Team and AWD international capability partners Bath Iron Works of the United States and Navantia, the AWDs’ Spanish designer.
Congratulations to all the members of ASC Shipbuilding’s IPT!
