As a long term employer of engineers, tradespeople and other technical professionals, ASC actively encourages school students to get involved in STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering and maths.
Today we were delighted to meet a group of Year 10 geography students from Pembroke School, Adelaide.
The 31 students are investigating the management of the Lefevre Peninsula as it prepares for the massive build-up in shipbuilding and submarine industries in coming years.
Planning issues to be considered included the environment, local population, housing and infrastructure, especially transport.
ASC’s Group Environment Adviser Mitch Bacon spoke to the students about ASC drastically cutting the amount of waste going to land fill, from 60 per cent to 31 per cent in the past three years, as well as ASC staff’s recent ‘clean-up day’ that removed a large amount of rubbish from the local environment.
Questions from the students included what size was the Collins Class submarines (77m-long) and how many jobs will be required by the new shipbuilding and submarine building programs in coming years (up to 6000, according to Government projections).
ASC wishes the students well and looks forward to welcoming some of them back in coming years as part of our future workforce.
